Term 4


This term we are learning about narrative writing. We will begin by retelling known stories by identifying the beginning, middle and end. I like to use a hamburger as a way of separating the story into segments. 


Next we will attempt to look a little deeper at the setting and clearly identifying a problem and solution before we attempt to create our own narratives!


This term we will also focus on letter writing at the end of the term, very timely for writing to Santa and friends and family.

 Term 3


Term 3   Week 6- week 10

We are now focussing on procedural writing- giving instructions.

Some of our goals include:

• title
• goal
• needs
• steps
• check

I have noticed a great improvement in the children's writing- both legibility and full stops. We are still focussing on full stops and capital letters. Our instructions should make this really obvious as each instruction will start with a capital and end with a full stop.

Term 3  Weeks 1-5

This photo shows a picture plan. There are 3 boxes to recall the beginning, middle and the end of the story.

We are completing our poetry unit over the first week before we leap into retelling.
I have noticed that because poetry does not reinforce full stops and has irregular layout we are beginning to forget these important things in our other writing!

So as a plan to combat this we are going to retell well known children's stories.

We are learning to:

• Use a picture plan correctly
• Write a title
• Record the story in order
• Use finger spaces and full stops correctly!

Usually I try not to put a huge emphasis on neatness but I am also going to be encouraging the class to try and 'keep their letters sitting on the line' and ask them to 'make it look like adult writing'.

Your child also has their own specific learning goals. It would be great if you could ask what they are and we could send books home to show when we are/ have achieved them!

Term 2

This second half of term 2 we are learning about poetry.

Some of the key understandings are:

• Rhyme
• Rhythm
• That all writing tells a message
• Similes (using like or as- as quiet as a mouse)
• Alliteration (starting with the same sound- lovely lion)
• Describing words

We will write many different types of poems. As well as a writing focus on poems we will have a poetry recital at the end of this term. A letter will be sent home explaining more.

When children write with the teacher their work is always displayed on 'the stand'. This work has had significant focus given to their writing goals. It is a great chance to celebrate their writing achievements. The following day the children illustrate their previously published work and finally on the third day they write independently on a new topic.

A highlighter system is used to illustrate achievements and next learning steps.

• Green- achieved
• Orange- next learning step
• Blue- children's evaluation of own work (things they have included, corrected etc...)

This half of term 2 the writing focus is report writing.
